Advice for Young People: 'Live Your Dreams' by Ian Thorpe
Steven Maxwell

Live Your Dreams by Ian Thorpe, Scholastic Australia, Living Legends Series, Gosford, 2002.

Live Your Dreams by Ian Thorpe is about the secret of this certainly successful swimmer's success, specifically written to inspire children to achieve their full potential.   1
The book is an easy-to-read 48 pages in a magazine format. We find out about Thorpe's very normal childhood, how he got into swimming almost accidentally, his own personal philosophy of success, and what a successful lifestyle is like. We start in The Wading Pool, so to speak, where we find out what about Ian's power of concentration with Lego. Onto his First Strokes where Ian imagines his body is a machine that drives him through the hours of training. The path to success is The Hard Slog of Ian's rigorous training program. Butterflies are not for everyone, for some it is better to relax before a big race. When you have big goals it is best to create many little steps to The Finishing Line, then you can Live Your Dreams. It is not, however, always easy Living Your Life when you are famous, especially when all you want to do is to be normal. It feels good to give to Charity and to always be Looking Ahead for new and exciting challenges.   2
This book could provide a child at Primary level with the basic thinking and productive skills to learn how to become focused on achieving success. The young reader finds out that Thorpe was just a normal kid with a normal upbringing and that, thus, everyone can achieve success on a personal level. The way to be really successful is, therefore, to work hard and set goals you can achieve. Most importantly, success in Live Your Dreams is defined as a personal achievement, not about winning or being the best. Success is achieving your personal best and Live Your Dreams conveys this important message in a tone accessible to its audience.   3
Live Your Dreams is Scholastic Australia's inaugural book in their new Living Legends series. The aim of this series is to profile high achieving young Australians as a way of sharing their philosophies and successes with other young Australians.
